Bill Ayers is delusional

Bill Ayers

Terry Gross, of WHYY-FM in Philadelphia, intereviewed terrorist Bill Ayers on her radio show "Fresh Air" on Tuesday (listen to the interview here). While Ayers is a well-spoken person, he is delusional about certain aspects of his past.

Two things he said in the interview were simply ludicrous.

First, he claimed he was not a terrorist because his group, the Weather Underground, did not aim to hurt people. That is an amazing statement on two counts.

First, it is irrelevant. A terrorist is a terrorist whether he or she wants to kill people or simply destroy government property. If you use violence in an effort to affect political change, you are a terrorist.

And second, he planted bombs. He claims that his group's bombing at the Pentagon actually closed the air war in Vietnam for a couple of days (I find that hard to believe). If true, however, how many American soldiers did he kill? Besides, he bombed the New York City Police Department headquarters in 1970, the U.S. Capitol building in 1971 and the Pentagon in 1972. It was only luck that no one was hurt in those bombings.

Discussing unions on radio tomorrow

I will be a gues on the "Talk With Ron Williams" show Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. along with Jeff Rex. We will be discussing unions and the bailout of the auto industry. Rex, if you are unaware, is a rabid leftist who I am sure stands squarely behind not only unions but also bailing out the auto industry. It should be entertaining as well as informative.

Be sure to tune in and call in if you like. You can listen at 940 AM or on the Web at www.espnlima.com.

[COLUMN] If GM fails, blame UAW

Bailout

The ball is really rolling now. All the pigs are lining up at the government trough to get a piece of that handout ... er ... bailout.

American Express is going so far as to redesignate itself as a bank so it can get a piece of the pie. Automakers, never one to pass up a free handout, are also throwing out scary, though completely ridiculous, doomsday predictions about what would happen if they fail.

Give me a break.

Such companies aren't too big to fail. They are just too big. Let them fail. Big companies fail and smaller, leaner companies that can do it better, faster and cheaper will step in to take their places.

Besides, it is the unions that have long ago destroyed the American auto industry, not the current economic downturn (crisis is excessively overblown for what is happening in the economy). You can't keep putting the screws to the company and not expect consequences.

The average compensation for a laborer for one of the Big Three automakers is $73.20 per hour. At Toyota, that average is $48. America's automakers are the most overpaid workers in the world. If you don't believe me, consider this. The average hourly compensation for professional workers is $47.57. The average for all workers is $28.48.

However, there is another reason to oppose the bailouts other than the lack of economic sense.

Happy Birthday, St. Augustine of Hippo

St. Augustine of Hippo

Today we mark the birthday of one of the greatest Christian theologians of all time, St. Augustine of Hippo (A.D. 13 November 354 to 28 August 430). He was of Berber descent and was born in present-day Algeria.

St. Augustine developed the concept of original sin. However, more importantly, he outlined the idea of just war, a concept I use today to judge the use of military force. When I call the Iraq war an illegal, immoral and unjust war, much of my analysis rests on the concepts put forth by St. Augustine.

The other reason I admire Augustine was that he believed the Bible should not be taken literally when it contradicts what we know from science and what our God-given ability to reason tells us. He wrote against a literal interpretation of Genesis and said such a dogmatic belief in the literalism of the Bible would be dangerous to the faith.

As he wrote in A.D. 408:

Never Forget

I know I have posted this video before, but I really do love it and it is so appropriate on the day we set aside to honor our veterans.

Never forget.

Government thugs actually wear jackboots

Gay marriage protest

Los Angeles police officers arrest a pair of protesters as hundreds demonstrated against the Mormon Church's support of Proposition 8, the California ballot measure that banned gay marriages, in the Westwood district of Los Angeles Thursday, Nov. 6, 2008. (AP Photo/Reed Saxon)

Wow. Look at what the Los Angeles police officers are wearing as they break up a protest last week against the gay marriage ban. Those look like jackboots to me.

Fight at Church of the Holy Sepulcher

Israeli police rushed into one of Christianity's holiest churches Sunday and arrested two clergyman after an argument between monks erupted into a brawl next to the site of Jesus' tomb. The fight was between Greek and Armenian monks.

Glad we have religious orders to show us how to live.

[COLUMN] Obama as FDR? JFK?

Presidents

Americans are such a gullible bunch. Throw some pretty words at them and a pithy slogan and they melt. Hence, we have elected the least experienced and most socialistic president in U.S. history.

Well, we have not elected him; we elected his electors to the Electoral College. Those 538 men and women will conduct the real election on Dec. 15.

I'm not sure how it makes sense, in the midst of a so-called economic meltdown and two wars, to hire a 40-something with no real leadership experience. None. Of course, that has not stopped him from writing two autobiographies.

It takes some hubris to publish two autobiographies before the age of 45 without actually having accomplished a single thing of note. He even had the audacity to compare himself to President Lincoln in one essay.

I am amused, however, by the somewhat apt comparisons to Franklin Roosevelt. Those doing so believe it to be a compliment. Like FDR, Obama is a raving socialist who believes big government is the answer to all our problems. Both men also ran on a platform of "change," without articulating any specific change.

All form and no substance.
