[COLUMN] Saddam won't be last to die

The butcher of Baghdad is dead.

Saddam Hussein was tried by an Iraqi court and sentenced to die. His appeal was heard and denied. Iraqis executed him in an Iraqi execution chamber by hanging in accordance with Iraqi law and tradition. U.S. military officials held Hussein as long as they could to prevent him from being tortured before his execution.

Yet, somehow, the world found a reason to criticize the United States for the execution because some Iraqis present for the hanging taunted the former strongman.

The ironic thing is, the world knows the United States would have handled the trial and execution differently. We prove it every day as criminals sentenced to die thrive for decades on death rows. And when the government does execute a criminal, it is usually by a lethal injection that puts the convict to sleep before gently stopping his or her heart.

We don’t shoot them to death or break their necks on the end of a long rope.

Nor do we taunt them before they die. In fact, we give them a choice for their last meals and allow them to visit with family before they die.
I imagine the abuse the United States takes, much of it admittedly deserved, is akin to the abuse the Romans took when its legions reached their peak of power under Emperor Trajan early in the second century. People have to blame someone and the person with the biggest stick usually makes the best target, right or wrong.

While the international blame was to be expected, the reaction of U.S. officials to the taunting during the hanging was surprising and demonstrates just how clueless American officials are when it comes to dealing with the Islamic world.

Somehow, to them, they think the taunting might demonstrate that Prime Minister Nouri al Maliki’s Shiitic government might not be serious in combating the Shiitic militias.

Well, duh!

U.S. government officials fail to realize the level of hatred between the Sunni and Shiites. This battle between the two major sects of Islam has been raging since the seventh century. For more than 1,300 years, Sunni and Shiites have been killing each other. They will continue to kill each other until one sect wipes out the other.

There is no problem with that. If the Muslims want to kill each other over their petty differences let them. We can do nothing about it even if we wanted to.

There is absolutely no military solution to the problem. So what is Bush likely to do this week to solve the Iraqi quagmire?

Propose to send more troops!

This Islamic problem further proves the genius of our Founding Fathers in insisting on a separation between religion and the government. Nearly every problem facing Islam today is a result of its intermixing with government and its idiotic belief that religious rules should carry the force of law.

But what more can you expect from a religion that was founded more as a political/military movement by a warlord determined to exact monetary tribute from surrounding tribes?

Unlike today’s Islamic leaders, the prophet Mohammed was at least pragmatic. He only killed infidels when it was economically prudent. Nor did he particularly care about the Islamization of those he conquered because that would mean a reduction in the tribute from those lands. Additionally, today’s Mohammedan leaders have long forgotten the prophet’s warnings against killing other Muslims.

In fact, Islamists have been fighting the West and each other for so long, they can’t even fathom the word peace.

So why does President Bush continue to insist that Americans must die in this silly religious infighting between Islamists when even military leaders are convinced they cannot put an end to the sectarian violence? That is as ridiculous and tragic as the centuries-long dispute itself.

Hussein might be dead, but he certainly won’t be the last casualty in the Sunni/Shiite conflict.

The only question is, now that more than 3,000 Americans are dead, how many more must die before this country’s politicians realize that it will take more than military might to put an end to the sectarian violence in the Islamic world. It will take an act of Allah.

Tom,

Messiahs bedamned....All of them!!

They have brought more death and destruction to the human race than any other known idea with greed a not too distant second.
The idea that a invention of the human mind designed to controll other peoples thinking and behavior could possibly be applied fairly to all is beyond ludicrous...almost to the point of insanity!!
Furthermore, what sane god would tolerate Worship?

Bring our troops home...NOW!

This great nation should be setting a positive example for the rest of the world...lets get to doing that!!

I'm not saying we could ever be beyond reproach but we certainly could see more clearly if we did'nt have our nose stuck up everybody elses arse!!

Our own infrastructure and healthcare systems would surely have benifited more from the 300 or so billions we have thrown at this stupid debacle in the mid-east!!

The waste of over 3000 of our valiant soldiers in this manner is beyond stupid...to the point of being criminal!Charges should be filed and Suit brought!!

We should have never taken the SOB alive. He was armed, a grenade in his hidie hole would have saved us a lot of trouble and expense. It may eventualy come to a true Jihad, the Muslems against the rest of the world. If we are stupid enough to let the Iranians get the Bomb, look out. At least during the Cold War, the Russians were not sucideal.

Certainly the administration has to take the blame for our involvement in Iraq but I still can't understand Congress claiming they were lied to and duped into initially supporting the invasion. Basically they simply took the President's word without any physical evidence or proof and didn't investigate beyond the President's claims?!!!We know for certain that not a single one of them listened to their constituents. My persoanl belief is that more Americans were opposed to an Iraq invasion than supported the idiocy. And I, along with countless other veterans, wrote numerous letters trying to convince the jerks in office what the end result of an invasion would be.

Yes sir Tom; they've been killing one another for centuries; for reasons the west may never understand. There wasn't one person in Congress or the military who could understand any of that? The reasons NOT to invade Iraq was well understood by everyone. The truth of the matter is they didn't care; they had a different agenda. "THEY", not just the President. We all have our views on what that agenda was.

The whole thing just sickens me; not just the war but the open defiance to the will of the American public and the obvious under-handedness of the government to simply do what they want and not what is best for this country. Well of course the world is going to blame us for the execution of Saddam. We've made ourselves patsies of stupidity.

I have a question? And I can't find anywhere else to ask you! This is why I came to this spot. What is the differece between a conseritive and a Libertain? I am serrious.

Tommy boy writes; "..it will take more than military might to put an end to the sectarian violence in the Islamic world. It will take an act of Allah."
Well Tommy you are in that dream land called "libertaria". The only solution is to kill them all because as long as one or the other lives they will be out for the others blood. Do you feel that Iran will allow the Saudi's to continue to collect the millions in oil revenue that they currently count. Greed under the flag of religion will cause the fighting to continue.

I have nothing to say about this column. As a matter of fact, I haven't even read it. I just wanted to point out that 40 years is a LONG time. Yep, it's one of the touchstones of middle age. Right up there with retirement and getting false teeth. Neither of which are that far away, are they Tom? Yep. The Big 4-oh. Does it hurt?

09 January 2007 17:03:07
Oh Bill...that was wrong... on multiple levels...soooo wrong. wink

09 January 2007 21:22:53
So, I guess Bill Clinton, John Kerry and Ted Kennedy were also all lying when they referred to Hussein as an "immenent threat." Oh yeah, I forgot, that was when it was popular to say "go get 'em Mr. President."

Also, this is not a country, contrary to modern day popular opinion, designed to be ruled by the so called "will of the people." Another way to put it is, we are not a mob rule society. Oh yeah, I forgot, today everything is about being popular, who cares about right or wrong, or national security.

Just what was on those trucks going from Iraq into Syria days before we invaded, and why are Syrian born and bred terrorists fighting in Iraq? And what about those IEDs, which came from Iran? Why are Iran and Syria so involved in Iraq's civil war?

Oh yeah, you must have forgot, they want you, your family, your friends, and anyone else that might have a problem with Islamic domination of the world dead. Go tell them their sectarian violence is rediculous and see how fast they cut you from ear to ear.

Its no wonder the Islamic terrorists say we run at the first sight of blood.

In WWII, Holland remained nuetral, thinking they would be safe by not getting involved. Hitler bombed, invaded, and occupied Holland, and did so brutally. The US also, decided it was none of her affair, until Japan, believing us to be weakwilled and soft in the middle, attacked us. After Pearl, where did we go? Did we go the Pacific and fight Japan? No. We went to Europe, and fought Hitler. And when we finaly did enter the war in the Pacific, it took all America had to sustain the effort.

Today, commentators who have done nothing but sit back in their lazy boys and play armchair president, can do nothing but find fault and reasons why "it can't be done."

After WWII ended, it took 11 years to rebuild Germany. I believe it was 16 years after the American Revolution before our Constitution was ratified, and you should read what they were saying in England at the time.

What a weak, spineless bunch of cowards we have become.

"Progress has brought us both unbounded oppurtunities and unbridled difficulties. Thus, the measure of our civilization will not be that we have done much, but what we have done with that much. I believe that the next half century will determine if we will advance the cause of Christian civilization or revert to the horrors of brutal paganism. The thought of modern industry in the hands of Christian charity is a dream worth dreaming. The thought of industry in the hands of paganism is a nightmare beyond imagining. The choice between the two is upon us." - Theodore Roosevelt, 1909
