Picture the response a white counsel member blaming black store owners in their wards for their problems would get. Or heck, a white counsel member blaming foreigners the exact same way Derry did, for that matter. He would definetly get calls for his resignation. Not to mention the fact that this "foreigner" is a FORTY YEAR US CITIZEN.
I think Derry has a point about selling paraphernalia. However, it is clearly a symptom of the problem, not the cause of the disease. Would I sell that stuff at a store I owned? NO. But I also wouldn't locate where there is a demand for such things, something that I'm sure Eddir is now reconsidering himself.
Derry exposed his lack of leadership, at best. He could have made a decent public plea to business owners to remove the products, instead he p'd them off and now they are certain to continue selling the stuff just out of spite. At worst, he's a racist.

Yes I STILL think there are better ways to murchandise these items than direct point of sale next to candy etc. However, there is no excuse for Derry Glenns remarks, or is refusal to do the right thing. LEAVE!!!! GET OUT DERRY!!! Move on. as for Shurelds, I have heard enough of her to know she aint to bright either. IMHO.

Hey, Mr. L., Glenn might want to check next time he is so quick to point, I'll bet if he looks there are 3 fingers pointing back at him.
I do agree that drug parafinalia , if that is the case, has no place out in the open, our youth are too impresionable when they see that stuff.
But to call a LEGAL 40 year citizen a foreigner, cmon Derry become an asset, look around and turn in some of the "illegals" running loose in this community.
Also isn't there a law, or whatever, that allows cars, residences etc. involved in drug trafficing and busts to be confiscated by the police?
Maybe, just maybe, he should keep his yap shut and quit drawing so much attention to himself. Ya think ?
Just wanted to check your colum, it is interesting, informative, and entertaining.
You have some really far out, not far left, not far right, but far out. FAR, FAR OUT bloggers in here ! See Ya
Does Glenn still own the house involved in the drug bust / shooting? Maybe he should shut his yap and quit drawing attention to himself.

I kept thinking, "those names ring a bell", Pitts,Shurelds, Manley, where have I heard them so many times? Then it hit me, some of them have been regulars in the police blotter in the Lima News over the years.

Well said, Ohio Republiscum. These two fools think that community action involves gimmicks like walking to work to protest gas prices (while your mom follows you in her car) or holding news conferences every week.

You are exactly on point. Glenn did not speak to these owners before running his mouth. And his comments, regardless of whether you think Glenn is right about drug paraphernalia, were way off-base and that he refuses to apologize shows the true nature of his character.

You keep agreeing with me and I am going to get suspicious.
You are right, though. Because Glenn won't apologize, he needs to go. Perhaps a recall? I wonder what the city charter says about that. I will have to research that.
As for Shurelds, she is a fool and judges people on the color of their skin instead of their character. She fits in with Glenn and Tommy Pitts.

Still no apology from Glenn
Derry Glenn once again proved how dishonorable and hypocritically self-serving he really is. One of the many people he offended with his racist comments and "clueless xenophobia" concerning foreigners and Arabs owning stores in his district politely asked for an apology from Glenn at the City Council meeting Monday evening.
Glenn, of course, rudely refused. In fact, he was so rude that City Council President John Nixon had to gavel him quiet and told him, "Have another press conference. You can respond that way." That is a spine I didn't think Nixon actually had.
Then Glenn showed his ignorance on Sunday. I am told that on "Soul of the City," the WIMA-AM radio show to which I no longer listen because hearing Vickie Shurelds' inane and intellectually vapid chitchat is painful, Glenn and Shurelds accused me of doing nothing but sitting on the sidelines and casting stones.
I could list all the community boards and organizations to which I belong, or perhaps the year I spent in the Iraq war or my 23 years of military service to this country, state and community in the Army National Guard, but that is not important. Rather, because Glenn and Shurelds clearly have no idea what it means to live in a free country, let me explain something they obviously didn't learn in whatever government school they attended.
Public debate is the lifeblood of a Democratic society. Only through a literate, knowledgeable public with access to information can a free society function. And that includes the ability to criticize ignorant or racist government officials or policies. Free and open debate leads to the best solutions. I speak out about Glenn's moronic antics because I care about my community.
Glenn and Shurelds just don't get it. Glenn rails on about racism and then behaves in a racist manner. And, of course, Shurelds will back Glenn no matter what he does simply because the color of his skin. How racist is that?
But it isn't that I facilitate open and honest debate that has Glenn upset. It is simply that Glenn would rather do the criticizing than being the one criticized. For example, in 2006, Steve Guthrie resigned from Pandora Village Council after using the N-word in reference to some black children. Glenn was outraged and attended a Pandora Village Council meeting.
"I am satisfied with what happened with the resignation," Glenn said. "I kind of appreciated that it happened. I feel it would keep a sore face on the city. I think it was the right thing to do so the city can move on."
Well, why won't Glenn practice what he preaches? Because he uttered racist remarks and refuses to apologize like a decent human being, I think he should resign to eliminate this sore face on our great city.
How about it Derry? You going to finally act like a man and apologize and resign or are you going to continue to act like a baby and defend your indefensible acts? The choice is yours but your past behavior tells us you will continue to dishonorably defend your racist remarks and "clueless xenophobia." And it is the good city of Lima that will suffer.
