If I understand this correctly, they are telling me they could find no record of my grandmother's birth in that city. I know that is where she grew up but I was not clear if she was born there. That is why I sent requests to two cities for her.I am concerned, though. This is the city I always thought she was born in. I hope they find her certificate in the other city or I could be facing a serious stumbling block. I need her birth certificate.

Thomas, Congratulations on your citizenship work. And it is work. One thing I discovered was that the names can be slightly different, like you discovered with your grandfather, and the date of birth can be off by a week or ten days. My grandfather for example, always celebrated his birthday on a certain day in January. The Comune di Trapani sent me his birth certificate with a date ten days later. One possible explanation is that they were all born at home in those days and when the mother was up and around she went to the Comune to register the birth. Also my grandfather was Nick to us. We presumed it was Nicholas or Nicola, but it turned out to be Nicolo' with the accent. Great stuff.
Disregard if you know all this already, but to me it seemed like the writer of that e-mail might have checked for the exact name and exact date and looked no further. Your grandmother might have been registered a week or so after her birth like my grandfather.

Mike,
Thanks. Never thought of that. If I don't make progress soon I might have to make my requests more general.
