My position in the FOIA request
Posted by: Lucente
Just checked my Freedom of Information Act request with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and I am request number 5,491 of 5,809 pending requests.
I think I have a wait.

I'm following your blog as I am trying a similar path to you, although a bit harder because I am going back to great-great-grandfather.
I was just curious if you know about the new USCIS genealogy online search coming August 13th? http://tinyurl.com/6gp6gt
I am holding off to submit my search for that.
You may want to consider doing both (although you'll have to pay) because the USCIS genealogy program may be much quicker.

Nevermind, I saw the June archived post that you know of it.

Yes, I have been watching that. Though, as I follow my FOIA request, I notice they are getting through 50 to 100 requests a day, which means my request should be fulfilled sometime September, so I will have to decide if it is worth it.
I have not seen how much the new service will cost, have you?

Yeah, I saw an email from someone at the USCIS office that is going to do the genealogy search: http://tinyurl.com/6842r3
Apparently $20 for the search, and $20-$35 for the copy depending on the type of record. I would gladly pay that to keep the search under a year, but I don't have enough concrete information on my GGGF's arrival/name spelling to make a request at the moment.
