Police 'diversity' not worth the effort

Derry Glenn

More racist talk from Derry Glenn.

This time, the most prominent of Lima's three stooges wants to spend his own money to scour other cities for black applicants to apply to become police officers and firefighters. He hopes to scan civil service lists in other communities to look for possible applicants, if the lists indeed contain the skin color of the applicants.

Fortunately for Lima, Glenn rarely follows through on his crazy plans.

Still, there appears to be a belief among some that diversity in the Police and Fire departments is something important. Actually, it extends to work forces generally.

This is simply a fallacy.

Diversity of opinions is good. Diversity of skill sets is good. Such things are functional. Nonfunctional difference such as color, age, nationality, etc., have no bearing on how a person, othwise qualified for the position, performs his or her job and any claims to the contrary are simply racist ramblings.

Let's look at it from the perspective of police work. Glenn, et al., likes to make the claim that it is somehow better to have blacks patrol black neighborhoods and Hispanics patrolling Hispanic neighborhoods. There is no reason to believe this is true. In fact, it is simply racist to suggest that whites are incapable of policing black neighborhoods or blacks policing white neighborhoods. Not a single shred of evidence exists to back up this claim.

We can take this even further. Should only black judges and black prosecutors handle crimes committed by blacks? What about those of mixed heritage? Can only black reporters write stories about black subjects? Should black baggers at the grocery store be used to bag the groceries of black shoppers?

See how silly it can get. Didn't we have a civil rights movement to eliminate such race-based ideas?

As a resident of Lima, I don't care what color of skin is under that blue uniform. I simply want the best qualified candidate. Same holds true for sex. I don't care if it is a man or woman saving my life in a house fire, so long as he or she is capable of doing the job. If blacks or women do not apply for those jobs, then so be it.

In the end, skin color matters not. It's a shame that someone like Derry Glenn and Tommy Pitts, supposed representatives of their respective wards, have decided their representation ends where the skin color lightens.

The law is the law and it should be followed to the letter no matter what the skin color of the officer is.

Does Derry really believe that the outcome is going to be any different for the accused if the officer has a different skin color?

Derry is desperate, and would force blacks to apply for the job if it were possible to do so. If blacks don't want to work for the police force, that is their business, not the business of the Police Department. They can encourage, but other than that, it is up to any individual to apply for the job. This has nothing to do with racism, discrimination, or equality, as Derry keeps inferring, but everything to do with the kinds of jobs that are, or are not appealing to blacks. Perhaps he should inquire more within his constituency, to find out why they aren't jumping at the chance?

I spoke with someone in Derry's ward who is trying to be a police officer. The prospective candidate is not happy with Derry's outsourcing. The civil service process is competitive enough without Derry doing things that could keep motivated local people from getting the jobs.

Kelvin,

I keep pushing against giving him press every time he calls or sends out a release. But it is a hard argument to make. The media should at least restrict his press time to actual accomplishments rather than every time an idea pops into his head. Unfortunately, in the media, there is a herd mentality and if one agency covers him, they all will.

Glenn is up to no good again I see . Maybe he should find better use of his own money and time by helping the people that started the "drugs bring death" campaign. They are at least starting to make a positive difference in this community. I think Derry Glenn and our other leaders should read this quote and take it to heart. at least it's not all talk no walk. Not to mention not being man enough to not blame others for his own shorcomings...I think I heard it best as 'losers blame people, leaders change people.' That was my point...less talk...more walk

Whatever happened to the million dollars he said he was going to raise for his ward? Is there like a big chart on billboard somewhere showing how much he's raised so far?

KELVIN, If he had the means, he'd probably give it a shot. I'm in Pitt's ward, who has been quiet lately. I'll take any race to straighten this area out. How about you applying? smile
